Connect the AI app you already use, Claude or ChatGPT, to this paper. You then ask it for help in its own chat, for example “add literature review to the Theory section”. It reads the paper, and everything it writes arrives here as a suggestion you accept or reject. It never changes your text on its own.

It runs on the subscription you already pay for. There is nothing extra to buy and no API key to find.

There is nothing to download and no key to create. Claude asks your permission on a collab-writer page instead.

Open Claude, either at claude.ai or in the desktop app. Open Settings and choose Connectors in the left column.
Click Add at the top right, then Add custom connector.
Fill in the dialog that opens:

Click Add. Claude now lists collab-writer with a Connect button.
Click Connect. A collab-writer page opens in your browser. Sign in if it asks, then click Allow. The connection starts only at this step.

Claude never receives your password or a key. To withdraw its access later, return to the same Connectors screen.

If Claude cannot connect this way

The route above runs through Anthropic’s connector service. If that service is unavailable, the Claude desktop app can install collab-writer as a local add-on. The add-on uses a key in place of the permission page.

Click Download the Claude add-on above.
Create a key in the box above and copy it.
Double-click the file you downloaded. Claude Desktop opens its installer.
When the installer asks for a token, paste the key and install.
In Claude, open Settings, choose Extensions, and check that collab-writer is switched on.
Quit Claude Desktop completely with ⌘Q and open it again. A new add-on starts only after a full restart.

The installer stores your key in your computer’s keychain.

ChatGPT has no installer for this, so you fill in a short form in its settings.

With the ChatGPT window in front, open Settings (⌘, on a Mac).
In the left column of Settings, click Plugins. Use this entry inside Settings, because the Plugins item in the main sidebar offers no way to add a server.
Open the MCPs tab, click Add at the top right, and choose Add MCP server.

The value starts with the word Bearer and a space, followed by your key. A key pasted on its own is refused.

Click Save at the bottom right of the form.

ChatGPT connects as soon as you save. The status at the top of this panel then changes to Connected; click Test connection if it does not.

4 Ask it to work

Open a new chat in your app and name the paper in your request. For example:

“In collab-writer, open ‘’ and add literature review to the Theory section.”

It can do three things:

Suggest edits: changes to your text that appear here for you to accept or reject.
Add notes: entries in this paper’s “AI Suggestions” appendix. Your text stays as it is.
Read: the paper, the files you attached, and your skills.

Say which you want. Suggested edits arrive as tracked changes in the Editor tab, and notes collect in the appendix.

Tied to the address, not to a link. An existing account gets Pro at once; otherwise it starts at that address's first sign-in. Either way they are emailed. Nothing is charged and nothing renews.

Addresses we have stopped writing to, after a hard bounce or a spam complaint. This blocks mail only: anyone here still has whatever document access they were granted. Clear one to allow mail again, for instance when a receiving server was misconfigured and the bounce was not genuinely permanent. If the address really is dead, the next message simply bounces and it returns to this list.
